Hitch Hiking Caterpillar

July 12, 2010
The latest update in the saga of creatures found in my garden: This morning I went out to water the plants in the greenhouse, came back in, made a cup of coffee and sat down at the computer. I was sitting there for about half an hour when I felt something tickling my shoulder and went to scratch it. However, instead of the woolly cardigan I was expecting, I felt something cool and squashy. Mildly horrified by this unexpected and somewhat unpleasant texture, I looked down and came face to face with the biggest bloody caterpillar I've ever seen. He was more than the length and girth of my index finger, without exaggeration. He was also quite beautiful, with some lovely pink spots and an odd looking spike on his rump. Popped the little fellow back on a tree in the garden and then took a quick photo of him before he wandered off.
